Question by J S: How can I turn my Hi-Fi system into a surrrounf sound system?

I’ve got a Hi-Fi system that i use to use for playing CD’s, etc. I want to turn it into a surround sound system for my room. It has an optical output and i wish to use it for my ps3 as well. Any ideas on what to do?

To make it into a surround sound system for your room you need to buy extended cords that could connect to the system so then you could but the speakers around your room. With the things connected then you may feel as if your in a theater….

Question by Brian: What is the difference between a hi-fi/stereo and a AV Receiver?

Hi, I just bought a new TV and wanted a new sound system to go with it because mines crap. So I’ve been looking at various sound systems but I don’t know if I need an AV Receiver over a hi-fi. AV Receivers can cost hundreds whereas a decent hi-fi can cost £100. Why is it so much more expensive for an AV Receiver?

AV stands for audio/video and it does just that. You can plug your audio and video into this receiver and send one signal to your television. The sound will play through the speakers attached to the receiver if you connect a video only cable to the television (s-cable, yellow video cable or component cables with no audio). If you connect an HDMI cable or component with audio cables then the sound will play through the television and speakers.

An AV receiver is always your best option.

Now for the Hi-fidelty stereo. These are good systems but are referring to reproduction of sound and the consistency of each sound reproduced. You may not get the same audio/video option by selecting one of these. Make sure it has video in options before you choose one. I am not sure many of these have them. Also the cables used to connect to a hifi are much different than normally industry cables. Be careful you might cause more damage than good buying one of these.
